Check If a Date is Tomorrow in JavaScript or Node.js

Sometimes you want to show a visual hint to users when a due date comes up. Like, “please notice that your task is due tomorrow”. From a developers perspective you need to compare the task’s due date against the date of tomorrow.

This tutorial shows you how to detect whether a given date represents “tomorrow”.

Determine Whether a Date is Tomorrow in JavaScript

JavaScript comes with date-related features built-in. You can use these features to compare a date against “tomorrow”. The comparison should be true if the year, month, and day match.

At first, you should create a new date and add one day. That date represents “tomorrow”. JavaScript handles month and year changes automatically when adding that day.

You can then compare the year, month, and day. Retrieve the JavaScript year using getFullYear which returns the full year number. For days, you should go with getDate. JavaScript also provides a getDay method, but that one returns the day in the week instead of the day of the month.

Here’s a utility function allowing you to detect if a given date matches tomorrow:

/**
 * Determine whether the given `date` is tomorrow.
 *
 * @param {Date} date
 *
 * @returns {Boolean}
 */
function isTomorrow (date) {
  if (!(date instanceof Date)) {
    throw new Error('Invalid argument: you must provide a "date" instance')
  }

  const tomorrow = new Date()
  tomorrow.setDate(tomorrow.getDate() + 1)

    return date.getDate() === tomorrow.getDate() &&
         date.getMonth() === tomorrow.getMonth() &&
         date.getFullYear() === tomorrow.getFullYear()
}

Now you can use the isTomorrow function from above like this:

isTomorrow()
// 💥 Error: Invalid argument: you must provide a "date" instance

isTomorrow(new Date())
// false

// assuming today is "2022-11-17"
isTomorrow(new Date('2022-11-18'))
// true

// assuming today is "2022-12-31"
isYesterday(new Date('2023-01-01'))
// true

Enjoy checking dates for tomorrow!
