Node.js — Constant for Platform-Specific Newline

Operating systems use different end-of-line markers indicating a new line after the given marker. For example, POSIX systems (like Linux and macOS) use \n and Windows uses \r\n.

This tutorial shows you how to retrieve a platform-specific EOL marker depending on the operating system that runs your code.

Use a Platform-Specific Newline Constant in Node.js

Node.js provides an EOL constant returning the platform-specific end-of-line marker for your OS. You may retrieve it from the os package included in Node.js. Here’s how you would retrieve the marker from the os package:

import { EOL } from 'node:os'

The EOL value depends on the operating system you’re running your code and Node.js is automatically returning the correct one for you:

  • Windows: \r\n
  • POSIX: \n

This EOL marker is helpful during tests when asserting against a generated string that may end with an OS-dependent EOL.

That’s it!
