How to Shuffle the Characters of a String in JavaScript or Node.js

Randomizing items should lead to an even distribution of available elements. For example, a coding error lead to an uneven distribution in Microsoft’s browser choice. This is something you want to avoid when shuffling items randomly.

This tutorial shows you how to randomize the characters of a string using JavaScript and the Fisher Yates shuffle.

Randomize the Characters of a String in JavaScript

The Fisher Yates shuffle (also known as the Knuth shuffle) is an algorithm to generate a random permutation of a finite sequence. That means it’s an algorithm to shuffle a sequence.

This tutorial shuffles a string which is a sequence of characters. We’re using the @supercharge/strings package to randomize the characters of a given string.

I’m the maintainer of the @supercharge/strings package. This package provides a shuffle method following the Fisher-Yates shuffle algorithm. Here’s how you would use the package to shuffle the term „Future Studio“:

import Str from '@supercharge/strings'

const shuffled = Str('Future Studio').shuffle().get()
// otur SdFutiue

That’s it! Enjoy shuffling!
